I was born in 1967 in Ellijay, Georgia. I have two daughters, Courtney Noel and Cassandra Belle. They are truly awesome blessings from God in my life. My parents are Floyd and Audrey Scott and I have two sisters, Brenda Timms and Malissa Reece. I was named for Mylon Lefevre, son of Eva Mae and Urias Lefevre. Mylon wrote the Elvis Presley gospel hit, “Without Him.” My grandparents were Ennus and Pearl Spivey and Joe and Ladeena Scott. Grandpa Spivey inspired the song, “Grandpa’s Walking Cane” that The Chapman’s recorded.
I grew up in a very musical family. Dad played in several local country bands that opened for Grand Ole Opry stars Porter Wagoner and Buck Owens. He started singing gospel music when he and my mother, Audrey, met. When my sister Brenda was old enough, she played piano, Dad guitar and Dad’s sister Catherine Crump sang harmony with them forming the Scott Family band.
When I was 7-years old, Dad bought my first bass guitar at a local pawn shop and paid $50 for the bass and $50 for the amp. I played bass with family band until I turned 11 and became interested in the piano. Brenda, who had already taken lessons, taught me the basic chords and I picked up the rest by ear. Brenda and I switched instruments and from then on I played the piano and Brenda the bass guitar.
When I was 17, some of my high school buddies and I formed The Harmony Brothers, a Southern Gospel quartet. We performed together for 2 years until I was offered a chance to go on the road with The Perry’s in 1986. That was my first professional, full-time music position. In 1988, I joined Gold City, my all time favorite male quartet. I played bass for them a year and half. After a short break from the road, I spent a year playing piano for the Dixie Melody Boys.
I started making the transition from traditional Southern Gospel to Bluegrass when I joined fellow Gilmer County native, Barry Abernathy in the gospel Bluegrass band he founded, Silvercreek. Barry, James Jones and I sang together about three years, until Barry left to join IIlyrd Tyme Out. After Silvercreek disbanded, I rejoined The Perry’s to sing lead and play bass.
I was with The Perry’s about three and half years. In the meantime, Barry Abernathy had joined Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver. In November 1996, I joined Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver to sing lead and play guitar. After nine years with the band, I felt the Lord was leading me in a new direction in my musical career. On December 31, 2005 I left DL&Q. I now have my own band, Barry Scott and Second Wind.
